Science
Endeavour’s Future Scientists study the Next Generation Science Standards, or NGSS. Our students learn how to think like scientists and make discoveries through inquiry based instruction. From hands on labs and computer simulations to critical thinking and argumentation, Endeavour’s students leave with the skills and knowledge to help them discover more about the world around them and become the scientists and engineers of the future.
Goals
- *Develop critical thinking skills and the ability to challenge assumptions, think creatively, and solve real-life problems
- *Value the results of their work and to enjoy learning from both successes and failures
- *Understand that scientific thinking is an essential and meaningful part of being a responsible citizen
- *Identify the connections between science and other disciplines
Curriculum
This year’s 8th grade topic: We will investigate answers to these questions: Why is understanding evolution important to humanity? Are we alone in the galaxy? Why does anything change? These three questions are the focus of our three topics: changing populations, space exploration and introductory physics.
This year’s 7th grade topic: Investigating answers to these questions: How do elements interact to provide energy? How does energy transform the Earth? How does energy flow in living systems? How does humanity interact with Earth’s energy flow and impact the ecosystems? What will be our carbon footprint?
Your child’s science course meets the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)for seventh/eighth grade science and relevant Common Core standards and several classes will be piloting curriculum with online components. Our goal is to use strategies that are supported by evidence as best practices, including those from AVID, and that are age appropriate; student will have improved scientific literacy, practice and responsible citizenship.
Homework Expectations
- The notebook is an essential for success in this class; how to use notes for success is one of our top goals.
- Students will also have fewer grades in class: assignments will be corrected but not necessarily counted toward a final grade allowing students to make mistakes as they master a concept.
- Grades are updated weekly on PowerSchool
- Work not completed in class will become Homework.
